Swedish vs Deep Tissue vs Aromatherapy: Which Massage Is Right for You?
Swedish, deep tissue, aromatherapy — the names do not tell you much on their own. This guide explains what each one involves and how to choose.
Swedish Massage
Swedish massage uses long, gliding strokes along the length of the muscles, combined with kneading, gentle stretching, and rhythmic movement. Pressure is moderate and consistent.
What it does: Improves circulation, reduces cortisol, eases general muscle tension, and activates the parasympathetic nervous system — the rest and recovery state. Most people feel deeply calm during and after a Swedish session.
Best for: First-timers, stress relief, general tension without a specific injury, anyone who wants something that feels good without being intense.
Deep Tissue Massage
Deep tissue targets the deeper layers of muscle using slower, more concentrated pressure — often the thumbs, forearms, or elbows — to work through adhesions (knots) in the muscle fibres.
What it does: Breaks down adhesions where muscle fibres have contracted and stuck together due to overuse, poor posture, or stress. Once released, these areas regain flexibility and the associated pain decreases.
Best for: Specific areas of chronic tension — tight shoulders from desk work, stiff lower back, persistent neck pain. Works best if you have had massage before and know you need more than surface-level work.
Important: Deep tissue does not mean painful. A therapist applying pressure so intense you are clenching and holding your breath is not helping — that level triggers muscle guarding, the opposite of what you want. The right level should feel like productive discomfort — intense but manageable.
Aromatherapy Massage
Aromatherapy massage combines Swedish technique with essential oils — plant-derived oils with both a scent and therapeutic properties, diluted in a carrier oil and applied during the session.
What it does: Different oils have different properties — lavender for calm, eucalyptus for tension, peppermint for muscle relief. The combination of touch and scent deepens the relaxation response and can address emotional stress alongside physical tension.
Best for: Women dealing with emotional stress, anxiety, difficulty sleeping, or hormonal tension. Also a good choice if you love the sensory experience of a fragrant, enveloping session.
Which Should You Choose?
- Exhausted and need to switch off: Swedish or aromatherapy
- Specific area of tension or pain: Deep tissue
- New to massage: Swedish — most universally comfortable starting point
- Stressed beyond just the physical: Aromatherapy
- Want a mix: Very common — a good therapist combines techniques in one session
